After 4 weeks of intense hands-on filmmaking exercises, the Guerrilla Filmmaking Workshop participants were able to complete their entries for the 11th Mindanao Film Festival to be held on December 9 to 15, 2015 at the Gaisano Mall of Davao Cinema 6.

“This year’s batch of workshop films have very big chances to win this year’s grand prize. The stories are well-written and the technical quality is far better than most workshop films ever submitted,” said Jill Palarca, the workshop director for the 2015 Guerrilla Filmmaking Workshop. The last time a workshop film won Best Film, beating all other films across all categories, was in 2012. The winning workshop film was Sintundo by CJ Liamzon. It won Best Workshop Film and the grand prize Best Film.

“What is even more interesting about this year’s batch of Guerrilla films is that for the first time all films have female directors — there’s a college student, a professor, an LGU employee, a work-from-home mom, and a 14 year old girl,” Palarca added. The organizer, Mindanao Film and Television Development Foundation, Inc, is pleased to have hit its objective to produce more women filmmakers in the region.

This is the organization’s contribution to the city-wide advocacy on promoting women’s rights. Davao City  has an active “Women Development Code” that upholds the rights of women and the belief in their worth and dignity as human beings. In this code, women shall be recognized as full and equal partners of men in development and nation building.

BIRTHDAY CAKE, by UM professor Sabrina Pilones, is about Carla who undertakes a task greater than her ego – adopting an orphaned relative and baking a birthday cake. Along the way to proving herself worthy of the responsibility, she just might realize that someone would actually want to put up with her imperfections.

PAGSALIG, by DavNor Public Information Officer Keisha Halili, is about Cado, a struggling college graduate who is appointed by his father, Mang Macario as the next village healer. He initially resists the idea but through an accident realizes that he seems to possess the power to heal. This thrusts him into a dilemma which forces him to choose between his new but unfulfilled life in the city or his old but stagnant life in the island that is his hometown. HIs decision is put the test in the ultimate challenge.

HONOR STUDENT by UP Mindanao student Ziyarah Manalo is about an obsessive honor student who will do whatever it takes to pass her removal exam.

TINIG by work-from-home mom Diamond Santella is about a mother who lives in the past and grows a resentment towards her child.

And CHECKMATE by 14 year old Ellah Plariza, co-directed and co-written with her school buddies Daniel Gil and Philippe Diola, is about a street kidn who turns out to be a talented young chess player.
