In 1999, the world screamed as the story of three student filmmakers who got lost in the woods trying to document a local legend unfolded in cinemas. The phenomenal hit Blair Witch project started a new sub-genre of films — found footage horror! It paved the way for independent horror cinema to be taken seriously as an art form.

Here in Davao, a horror film movement founded by award-winning director Bagane Fiola has been rounding up promising independent filmmakers since 2013 through the Davao Ngilngig Film Festival. Ngilngig is a Visayan term for scary. That year, 8 directors namely Ronald Gary Bautista, Arbi Barbarona, Jeylouks Dawn Calope, Miguel Santos, Rochelle Paula Carino, Albert Egot, Leo Jorge Bautista, and Bagane Fiola himself showcased a total of 12 horror short films.

Fiola’s first horror collection “Ngilngig Stories” was originally released in 2011. Its debut sparked an interest among fellow Davao filmmakers. After all, the city is never short of scary urban legends — the giant snake in the ladies’ dressing room of a certain old department store, the haunted house along Champaca street, the white lady in front of Carmelite Monastery, and of course the countless paranormal fodder in the Ateneo and Phil Women’s campuses — just to name a few.

And this is why Fiola’s very first DAVAO NGILNGIG FILM CAMP came to be. A collaboration between Origane Films and Balud Art Network, its objective is to preserve the urban legends of Mindanao in a short film series format.

On September 11 to 13, 2015 aspiring horror filmmakers will be whisked away to this secret “spooky” location (see photo below) to learn the rudiments of horror filmmaking and to produce a 5-8 minute low budget film which will be premiered at the 2nd Davao Ngilngig Film Festival in October 2015.
